Rodney AllisonPRESIDENT

As expected, now that the winter has set in with more rain and colder days, our accounts are showing the effect of this. Our June figures show a small loss for the club overall but the loss is much lower than we had budgeted for. Our restaurant sales were up, but both the bar and gaming sales were down on our budget. Fortunately, our year-to-date figures are still above our budgeted figures so we must just work through the leaner months ahead and save what we can on our costs.
For those of you that were at the Mid Winter function I am sure you will agree that it was a really fantastic evening. For those of you who missed out, I hope you have put in your bookings for the next show at the end of September. I know that you will be treated to some spectacular entertainment.
Our new gaming machines have been installed and we are now looking at introducing a new computerised control system during August. This will allow us to re-introduce the Loyalty Points system for members who purchase anything from the club. Furthermore, we will be able to introduce a much wider range of member’s draws. These will range from cups of coffee, promotional products, and of course our regular money prizes. Our intention is to give away smaller prizes more often thus giving more members the chance of winning a prize. We are still receiving applications for new members and for those who joined last month I would like to welcome you and hope that you enjoy the facilities and make some new friends at the club.
Our lunch-time members are also continuing to grow which is great news for the club as the word is obviously getting around that we have a lot to offer with our view and lunch time menus.

Dave HewitsonGENERAL MANAGER

Hi Folks
As we are getting closer to the time that we start our Loyalty Point programme I have laid out on the back page of this newsletter the whole implementation programme which I would strongly suggest you read. There will be a mail out once the system is in place to inform you of any other information that may be useful, as well as a sheet that will ask everyone to update their particulars. This would of course include your birth date which will become part of our promotional arsenal. All information as usual is treated in the strictest of confidence and will help us put our records back on track once and for all.
Kind regards
Dave
General Manager.

New Members NEW MEMBERS

Hi once again.
July’s New Members Day saw six new members welcomed into the club.
New applicant numbers during this month are running around about the same at the moment.
So things have slowed down just a little bit for now. I think we can put that down to the winter. We seem to get more applicants when the weather is warmer.
New Members Day for August is Sunday the 1st.
Hope to see you around the club.
Cheers.
Bill McChesney.

Club WelfareCLUB WELFARE (CWI)

Hello everybody. Oh my goodness, it’s August already!! Good thing about that is that the days are starting to get a bit longer again.
To bring you up to date on a couple of deaths that you possibly weren’t aware of, Dave Dobbin and Ken Wilson’s mum (and Corina’s and her siblings Grandmother.)
Dave Dobbins was a founding member of the club and used to enjoy Golf and Darts some time back. Dave died peacefully aged 74 years, after a short battle with cancer. We extend heartfelt sympathy to his wife Colleen and extended family for the passing of a loved husband and father.
Ken Wilson’s mum (Mrs Dixon) known affectionately as “Nana Mac” died in England two days before her 99th birthday. She was an effervescent wee dynamo at “4 foot nothing’ who lived her life with a positive (and sometimes naughty) attitude. Tragically, she ran a bath, stepped into and fell in scalding water, later succumbing to complications from her burns. It must seem very strange for Ken, Heather and their family not to have “Nana” chirping away on the ‘phone anymore – sincere condolences from us all. We enjoyed her frequent visits to New Zealand.
Food for thought – water temperatures are strictly monitored in institutions such as Rest Homes, Prisons etc. for the very reason that scalding water can be such a danger to the elderly or a lethal weapon in Prisons.
It was a high price to pay for this dear lady’s spunky and courageous independence.
Our lovely member Gael Atwill came through her hip replacement with flying colours – for a few hours. Two mature nurses came to change her position in bed at 3am and in doing so managed to fracture her hip socket. It would be really wonderful if she could experience some of the good fortune, health-wise, that she does with the occasional little “flutter,.” and know that this was the last challenge in many years to come. We send positive thoughts and buckets of best wishes
It is with real disappointment that I’ve learnt that several of our esteemed members are facing further treatment for conditions they thought they had beaten. Please accept our warmest best wishes for your quick return to good health, making today’s problems character building memories.
Remember: - The difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones - is the way we use them.
Take care and cherish today. It’s a gift – that is why they call it “the present.”
For now – Lynette SCEATS – ph. 478 7969

DartsDARTS

Hi All, can’t believe that it is already 1/3rd  through the 3rd quarter of 2010 already.  Time is marching on so fast, sometimes I can’t keep up with everything going on around the darting community.
Well, our darts team is probably wishing that Steve was still on holiday as we had the Drawn pairs in house the other Tuesday and you guessed it, Steve won again with Jean Nutton – well done guys.  I really didn’t give them much reason to wish I was away again, I really didn’t give many too much of a challenge to beat me – but I felt sorry for my partner as he really had to try hard to carry me.
North Harbour Dart League held the second of their tournaments this weekend and the Bays Club came up trumps again – winning first place.
Our team did us proud again with a monster win again Oasis in our last game 13-1 win – awesome team.  Hopefully, the other teams don’t feel that they don’t want to play us as we keep winning, but there is also a brighter side, that they feel they need to practice more to be able to beat us next time.
This coming Tuesday is the start of the last round before the end of year tournaments really kick in.  We will be playing away to Silverdale RSA.
If you wish to join our friendly little team, please feel free to come and visit us on a Tuesday night – we start by 7.30pm and usually finish by 10pm depending on the number of players that turn up.
Coming Events:
July 27th – NHDL round four – away game against Silverdale RSA
August 3rd – normal club night – new members welcome
August 10th – NHDL round four – away game against Oasis 1
August 17th – normal club night – new members welcome

FishingFISHING

Another AGM has been done and dusted, the only concern being to get as far as “apologies” and find that the Treasurer has departed overseas, on a fishing trip. The sort of news that can be inclined to induce heart palpitations, but not in the case of our Treasurer, he is as solid as they come, and the only bad outcome to arise was that strong winds in the Solomon Islands kept him ashore, and there wasn’t much fishing done at all.
The entire 2009/10 Committee agreed to stand again with Brian Cross at the helm assisted by Cliff Solomon, Bob Dowd and Bob Towersey and with the addition of John Le Compte and Charlie Lamb. If you have any queries, any of these good guys will be pleased to help you.
On the prize-winning list we have three main categories:-
Largest Snapper – Peter Angell – 3.26 kg (Not to denigrate Peter’s effort, but there must have been a lot of people who failed to weigh fish. In fact a heavier fish (3.62 kg) was weighed for one of Brian Cross’s daughters, on a Courtesy Weigh basis (she was not a Club member.)
Largest Fish – Alan Cliffe – 107 kg striped Marlin (he’s still smiling!)
Most Meritorious Catch – John Constable – actually a series of meritorious catches on a trip to the Ranfurly Banks, including a 38 kg Bass, a 15 kg Trumpeter (second heaviest Trumpeter on the boat in 16 years of Chartering) together with kingfish and Hapuku matching the great efforts of the other Anglers on the trip.
Congratulations guys. Well done.
In addition to ending the year in a better financial position than at the start (and this was one of the principal objectives of last year’s committee) the club has paid deposits on two pre-booked charters which will become effective in November, when fishing in the Gulf should be at it’s best:-
  -  9 November – an evening Charter on “Gulf Raider” (ex Gulf Harbour) and
 - 19 November – Full day to Moko Hinau Islands or Great barrier, aboard “Slip Ray” ex Ti Point.
No doubt you’ll hear more about these as the time approaches, but given that these outings are timed for when the fish will have shaken off the winter blues, and are dining greedily to prepare for the annual breeding fest, you may want to note these dates already.
All in all it looks as though the Club is well placed to have an interesting and enjoyable year, and sitting on my deck drafting this, with the sun beating upon my back, it is pretty easy to envisage myself on the water. Dang bust it!! I think I’ll go and throw the boat in the tide.

Ka kite a popo (see you tomorrow!) – Bob TOWERSEY

Golf

GOLF

Hi Folks,
Well the weather gods were kind to us on our last golfing day at the South Heads Golf Club, it was a pity that our numbers were way down on our usual number of players. I know we had a few of our regulars away on holiday, a few that were unable to handle the change of date from the 18th to the 11th and some that had their own golf club tournaments to play. And also some that were carrying injuries, so all in all, a turnout of 22 players was quite a good result. Hope to see you all back among us soon and that those carrying injuries are soon back and enjoying their golf again.
The course was in a wonderful condition, but the greens for most of us were hard to handle, which reflected in the scores.
The results of the day were as follows: Division 1 winner was Rex North (36) and runner up was John Sheehan (33). Division 2 winner was Brian Kidston (39) and runner up was Boon Leano (36).
Ladies nearest the pin, was again not contested, so maybe we should be looking at it being off the green as well, in order to get a result, as some courses do not have short holes on their par threes, as was the case at South Heads, as their shortest hole was 147metres.
Nearest the pin for the men, was taken out by Martin Lee ( Jim Dickie’s guest ) and the longest drive for the ladies was taken out by Karen Coates. There was only one two on the day, and that was achieved by Ed Connolly. Well done to you all!!
During prize-giving, it was very fitting that the prizes for winners and runner-ups, were golf balls, as there was such a smile on Brian Kidstons face when I handed him his box of balls, as at our last meet at Gulf Harbour, he lost a great number of balls, so for a Scotsman to get them gifted back, was a joy to behold for Brian. (No offence intended!!)
Now that this is my last scribe session, before I hand back to Vicki, I would like to get a message out to all the Bays Club golfers, that read this out of interest, but  have not yet played in our monthly sessions. Why not come along one of these months, you will see our golf calendar on our golf notice board, so there may be a course you would like to play. If so you will be most welcome along with guests. Just call me for a chat on 473 9465 or put your name down on our starter sheet when you see it up on our notice board.
Our next monthly tournament on the 22nd August,   will be  to a mystery destination. I made enquiries on the catering front for us to have breakfast in their clubhouse, before commencement of play, but I thought their prices were a bit steep, so I made arrangements with Dave our General Manager, for the club to put on a full breakfast for a very reasonable $15, but in order to make it a viable proposition, we need to have a minimum of twenty diners. The breakfast will be served at 7-15am, so put your names down on the list, those that require breakfast and those that do not, you need to be at the club at 8am, as the coach will be leaving at 8.15am. Remember there are no parking restrictions on a Sunday in Browns Bay.
All the best and happy golfing!!Your Golf Captain Brian.

Pool

POOL

On our Wednesday Wins ladder Rodger Green is a clear leader ahead of Brian Davis. Indeed, with over a month still until we reach the half yearly mark Rodger is approaching  a comfortable 100. Barrie, Peter and Darren complete the top five.
New club members, both male and female, are welcome to join in on Wednesdays meeting at 7pm. It's a fun evening.
The Mens Singles Tournament for 2010 came and went in a flash. We congratulate Rodger on clean sweeps in both the semi and the final. Well played. Runner up was David Read and losing semi-finalists were Brian and Peter Grime.
Our next Pool Section Tournament is Mixed Singles on Sunday 22nd August at 11.00 a m. See notice board for names.
August is Pool's turn for Raffles and I would appreciate any assistance please. Approximately 5 pm till 7 pm or whatever folk can manage.
Regards
John Capon

WAGS

WAGS

Our next tasting will be held on Thursday 12th August at 6.45pm.
Following our recent blind tasting between equivalent NZ and Australian wines, where NZ wines were voted the most favoured wines, (by a very small margin), we will be continuing in the Tri Nations euphoria by blind tasting equivalent  NZ and South African wines.
Samples will be blind tasted and those present will be asked to vote which of the wines they personally prefer.  After the votes have been counted, the nationality of the wines will be made known.   Go the Kiwis!!
All the wines to be tasted are available locally.
Our July tasting was conducted by Lion-Nathan with Wither Hills the dominant wines.
Their Sauvignon Blanc was voted the best white wine ahead of Trinity Hill & their Rarangi Savvies and their Chardonnay.
Of the well marked reds, the Trinity Hill Hawkes Bay Syrah was the Wine of the Night, closely followed by 3 Pinot Noir wines, from Mt. Difficulty Roaring Meg, Wither Hills and their Kings Series.
The wines were all excellent and made an enjoyable tasting.

Congratulations to the organisers and founder-members of the new Travel Club.  Contact details can be found in various places on the website and there’s a link in the menu (under Special Interest Groups) to a new page.
After a series of “debates” between Google and yours truly, travellers using Google Maps to find the Bays Club will now find it in the right place (again).

QUIZ NIGHT

The July brain teaser had 56 of us in 11 teams scratching our heads to find the answers to our usual burst of challenging questions (well they challenge my poor brain!) set by Paul including a dubious loose Economic question in round one – but we’ll let him off.
Obviously Sensational Six scratched their heads the hardest to emerge as our winners of the evening and taking home a prize of $140 to share amongst them – congratulations. They had a hard fought contest with last month’s winners Cosmos who finished in second place with very little between them during the evening. For most of the evening there was only 1 or 2 points between the teams as they duelled for the top two places. However Sensational Six opened up a 6½ point lead at the final post, but still a good prize of $112 for Cosmos coming second.  Superbats came in third and shared $84 between them. They also had the highest scoring round for the night on 19½  out of 20 - the highest scoring round recorded so far. Congratulations to our top places for July.  Cosmos deserve a further mention for getting all of the Famous Faces round correct and scoring a full 16 out of 16 wow – you know those faces! Out of the night’s top 3 teams two teams were new to the quiz – or had a name change to confuse the system! whilst Cosmos continue their run of being either first or second for the fourth month in a row – can anyone topple them?
The quiz master’s tip for this month was Las Vegas – name dropper as he is off there soon!  So we now know that Paul is staying at the Luxor hotel – looks very posh, visiting the Grand Canyon and, also courtesy of the tie breaker,  we all know that he has worked out how many large Casinos there are in Las Vegas – 38 he tells us – some of those must be on his itinerary!
Let us not forget our 4 lucky consolation draw winners for this month with each team sharing $56 and it was great to see a returning team and a new team in the 4 prizes that Paul drew from the bucket. Marbles have been absent for a couple of years and despite Barrie crossing out a correct answer during the evening they were a lucky winner, as was our WAGS convener Harry Hobin and his son plus one other forming a team named Hobson (Hobin and Son if you hadn’t got it). Great to see you Harry and hope you’ll join us again next time. The remaining teams to receive an envelope containing $56 were Johns Poms and Liverton. Johns Poms are making a habit of this that’s now four in a row – well done and surely going for a mention in the last article of the year. Once again Congratulations to all our winners, commiserations to those who left with nothing money wise – I hope you all had a great evening and look forward to you all being there again in around 4 weeks time.
The August quiz will be as usual on the last Thursday evening of the month 26th in the lounge at 7:30pm. The quiz master’s tip for August is … Elton John. I used to have most of his albums – so hopefully that will help our team! Look forward to seeing you at the quiz be you a regular or a new quizzer.
Until next month, Goodbye or should that be ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’! (sorry folks couldn’t resist that one)

travelTRAVEL CLUB

The inaugural meeting of the travel club took place on the 5th July 2010 with 15 members attending and 5 who are still overseas.
General discussion took place on what members hoped to get from the club with most agreeing they looked forward to sharing experiences of places people had travelled to along with good tips of what to do or what not to do and regular guest speakers.
Interest was shown on cruises and international travel and even trips away for a weekend nationally.  People were asked to put down the places they had travelled to and especially the places they would like to return to. The most countries visited was well and truly won by Fraser whose total of more than 60 countries visited is amazing.
Ross Kelly agreed to be our representative at the Bays Club Committee meetings.
It is estimated that we could grow to a membership of 50 after a settling in period and it will evolve into a regular pattern of guest speakers and enjoyable evenings with like minded members.
We were fortunate to have a presentation by Andrew Gullan on the Cook Islands. It was obvious Andrew has a great passion for the Cooks and its people and there were many questions from the group about Rarotonga and environs.  Andrew said that Aitutaki should be a must visit on everyone's bucket list –it is so beautiful.
The Bays Club have given us the first Monday of the month to meet at 7pm so anyone wishing to join us please email me abates@actrix.co.nz and I will make contact with you.

UNCLAIMED PRIZES - FRIDAY NIGHT RAFFLES
We still have a number of unclaimed raffle prizes from time to time. The best thing to do if you are not present when the draw takes place, is to leave your tickets with a friend to claim on your behalf, or leave with the duty sellers and they can check and let you know that you have won and they would write your name on the prize envelope, so you will be able to collect at your convenience.
In order to tidy things up, I have introduced an unclaimed prize register and the date drawn.
After one month has expired, the unclaimed prizes, will be re-raffled as a free draw to all people that purchase 5 tickets or more.
